This is not really a programming topic, but this could come in useful if your customer has lots of old Microsoft Works files to be converted.
Converting WPS files to DOC:
A WPS file is a Microsoft Works rich text document.
Problem:
Older versions of Microsoft Office (2007 and before) could open this document type.
But Office 2010 and later cannot open this document type.

Solution #1
On older Windows OS - XP or earlier:
Download Microsoft Works 7-9 File Converter:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-ie/download/details.aspx?id=12
Double click the downloaded file.
Follow the on-screen prompts.
Download the security patch from Microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-ie/download/details.aspx?id=29330
Double click the downloaded file.
Follow the on-screen prompts.

Solution #2
On newer Windows OS - 7 or later:
On Windows 7, the installer for Microsoft Works 7-9 File Converter fails.
So, instead:
Download Microsoft Word Viewer:
http://www.microsoft.com/en-ie/download/details.aspx?id=4
This program is aimed at Office 2003. However, I use it side by side with Office 2010 on Windows 7, without problems.
Double-click the file to install.
Follow the install prompts.
After the installation:
Select Start menu.
Type viewer in the search box.
Select Microsoft Office Viewer 2003.
Select File.
Select Open.
Set Files of Type to be All Files.
Browse to where your WPS file is located.
Double click the WPS file.
The file should open OK.
You can then select File | Save as, to save as a more common file format like DOC.
Or else: select all, copy, then paste to your favourite word processor.

Solution #3
If you do not want to install programs, then you can use an online converter.
note: obviously, you should not send sensitive or personally identifying documents !
I used zamzar, because it is free, and does not require registration.
However, they do require an email address - I use a spare email address that I do not really care about.
I found that zamzar could not convert some documents (whereas Microsoft Word Viewer worked really well!).
