Windows 7 XP Mode is a nice idea, where the virtual machine is integrated with the Windows 7 user interface.
However the performance can be truly appalling - this seems to be mostly due to heavy disk access.
If you really must use Windows 7 XP Mode, then here are some tips to improve performace.
Make sure the virtual machine is in the 'Powered Down' state.
If the virtual machine is running, then shut it down.
If the virtual machine is hibernated, then start it up, and then shut it down.
Select the virtual machine you want to configure.
